Bitbuzz Computing
We also run computing workshops and one-to-one computing tuition. Our tech expert Alec has a background in user interface design and software development. He trained as a designer and has extensive experience with 2D image editing and creation software, as well as vector graphic design software. He has also worked on the design and code of websites and web apps, as well as making apps for Mac such as the calendar PreMinder. You can see some of his icon and interface designs for web apps here.
Alec can offer an introduction to image editing, using design software or digital artwork creation. He can also show you how to make your own web pages using HTML and CSS, as well as adding more advanced features with JavaScript. There’s also the option to learn about the basics of coding using tools like Scratch or more advanced coding for Mac.
Bitbuzz Computing at Curious Minds
At the moment we offer a small workshop every Wednesday from 11:30am–12:30pm at the Curious Minds Home Ed group near Raynes Park. We bring laptops for the children to use if one is required. We try to help each child develop projects that they are interested in using creative software or code… or both! They can also talk to and learn from each other while getting experience with using computers to create. Alec is on hand to offer advice and help.
We recommend these sessions for children of ages ten and above who are happy to be self-directed. The cost is £10 per child per session. Groups are quite small so places please email us in advance at info@brickbuzz.uk to check availability.
The workshops happen on Wednesday mornings from 11:30am to 12:30pm. The first session this autumn will be on Wednesday 4th October– please check back soon to see all the dates for the autumn.
Curious Minds takes place at the 19th Wimbledon Scout HQ near Raynes Park. Please use these links to view the venue on a map:
Bitbuzz Computing Sessions at Spiritus
We run computing sessions at Spiritus in Hammersmith on Monday afternoons between 2:00pm and 3:30pm. Please visit the Spiritus website to find out more about what they do and how young people can join. The first session this autumn will be on Monday 11th September.
We will be looking at how to make your own web pages with code. Although websites can seem complicated, we will aim to demystify how they work behind the scenes and help you learn how to make and tailor your own content to display in a web browser.
We will cover the basics of HTML which controls the content of the web page, as well as CSS which controls the styling. We will look at how to prepare images to be displayed on a website and how to design web pages that can adapt their design to suit different sized devices, for instance a mobile phone or a desktop computer. We can also look at how to animate content and add more advanced interactive features to web pages using JavaScript.
We’ll also be working with some creative software to make images that can be displayed on websites. There is plenty to explore in the world of computing and code so there will be other things to try as the term progresses.
Spiritus takes place at 245 Hammersmith Road. Please use these links to see it on a map:
Individual Tuition
Alec can also offer individual computing tuition sessions for children or adults. He can travel to you and bring a laptop for use during the session if one is required– most destinations in London should be feasible. Topics can include any of those covered in the introduction to Bitbuzz Computing at the top of this page. The cost for a one hour tuition session is £35. Please drop us an email at info@brickbuzz.uk to find out more and to discuss your requirements.
